A Series of Workshops Investigating Art and Technology
The courses are arranged by HUMlab and Umeå Academy of Fine
Arts, no prior knowledge is required.
If you want to register or have questions regarding
these courses, please contact Carl-Erik Engqvist, Artistic leader
at HUMlab: carl-erik.engqvist@humlab.umu.se
Thursday January 24, 14.00-16.00: Electronic Anatomy
What does a computer or printer look like inside? In this
course, we will open up and take apart computers, printers,
stereos, etc. Equipment and materials supplied by teachers.
Wednesday January 30, 14.00-16.00: Steampunk
What is "Steampunk" and how can this be applied today? We will
look on different "steampunk" projects and discuss concepts of
analog VS digital technology from a sustainability point of view.
Equipment supplied by the teachers but materials and project the
participants will have bring themselves.
Thursday Februray 7, 14.00-16.00: Lifehack
A hacker uses her/his knowledge to obtain new, not easily
accessible information about a system. Through analysis and
manipulation the hacker is trying to understand and gain knowledge
about the structure within the system. But what can you really
hack? What do you do when you hack something? Can anything be
hacked? Equipment and materials supplied by the teachers.
Thursday February 21, 14.00-16.00: Recycling
Discussion on the concept of "Recycling" and
"sustainability" with a focus on practical examples. Participants
show their own projects or things that inspired them and considered
worth highlighting. It is also possible to work with their own
projects. Equipment supplied by teachers but the materials and
projects is the entrant for.
Thursday March 7, 14.00-16.00: Build your own basic robot using
Arduino and Lego
Who doesn't want to build their own robot? In this course we
will combine the Arduino microcontroller and Lego. No prior
knowledge in electronics, mechanics and programming is necessary.
Equipment and materials supplied by the teachers.
Thursday March 21, 14.00-16.00: Arduino hybrids
Can the Arduino microcontroller be combined with what is
considered" forfeited" technology and by this give it a "new life"
again? We will highlight examples and discuss what it takes to
create hybrids of old and new technology. It is also possible to
work with their own projects. Equipment supplied by teachers but
the materials and projects is the entrant for.
Thursday April 4, 14.00-16.00: Basic Circuit Bending
Circuit Bending is a method where you learn how to make
electronic circuits to do things that they were originally not
intended or designed to do. You will, for example, learn to make
electronic toys with sounds make new or other / new sounds and thus
create new instruments. Equipment and materials supplied by
teachers.
Thursday April 25, 14.00-16.00: The digital sound
Is there a primary digital sound and how does it sound? Based on
the concepts of "circuit bending", "modding" and "hacks" we will
take a closer look at the digital sounds. Equipment supplied by
teachers but the materials and projects is the entrant for.
Thursday May 2, 14.00-16.00: Conductive Drawing
Can a drawing function as electronic circuit? By using
conductive pens, electronic stickers and paper, you will be able to
"draw" functional electronics circuits. Equipment and
materials supplied by teachers.
Thursday May 23, 08.00-17.00: A visit to Kuusakoski in
Skellefteå
A visit to Kuusakoski Sweden AB which is a recycling company,
which has successfully established the largest recycling center in
Skelleftea, specialized in electronic scrap and precious
metals.
